Leading the Way

Vancouver Lipolaser has been offering a form of EMS to its clients for over 5 yrs and is very excited to be the first Full Body EMS Training Studio in Vancouver.

Electro Muscle Stimulation (EMS) has been used for decades by Physiotherapists, competitive and Olympic athletes, and professional sports teams to increase physical performance, muscle strength and endurance. Results are better, faster with less stress-related fatigue.

Celebrities, models and health-conscious individuals use EMS to sculpt and tone their bodies, increase their metabolism, and improve their overall fitness. Results are visible in less time.

The benefits of an EMS Whole Body suit stimulates, sculpts and enhances the body’s key muscle groups simultaneously, safely and effectively.

Recent studies indicate that EMS training helps to reset the body and mind, activates the metabolism and strengthens the immune system. Results are visible sooner and may include increased muscle mass and formation, endurance, and overall tightening while reducing weight and stress-related fatigue.

How EMS Works

All muscle movement in the human body is activated by electrical nerve impulses originating in the brain and carried along the spinal cord. Each impulse causes muscle fibers to contract creating tension. The tension causes the muscle to flex, which creates the movement.

EMS (Electronic Muscle Stimulation) uses electrical impulses that mimic impulses from the nervous system, causing the muscle to contract in a consistent and simultaneous manner. EMS technology enhances the impulse, resulting in a more intensive contraction when compared to classic weight or resistance training. It stimulates, sculpts and enhances all major muscle groups simultaneously, safely and effectively.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, researchers studied and documented electrical properties that generate muscle movement. In the 1960s, Soviet sport scientists applied EMS in the training of elite athletes, claiming 40% force gains. In the 1970s, these studies were shared during a conferences with Western sport establishments. Further medical physiology research pinpointed the mechanisms by which electrical stimulation causes adaptation of cells of muscles, blood vessels and nerves.

The first widespread use of EMS was by physiotherapists for injury rehabilitation and prevention. As the effectiveness and benefits became widely studied and recognized, EMS is increasingly being employed as a strength training tool for athletes and as a fitness tool for health savvy individuals. Numerous scientific studies have been conducted on its effectiveness for general and specific athletic and health enhancements.

Scientific Research

The American College of Sports Medicine examined the effects of short-term EMS training on the physical performance of hockey players, specifically skating, knee extensions and vertical jump performance. The study concluded that EMS significantly enhanced short skating performance and isokinetic strength, where the muscle contracts and shortens at a constant rate of speed. Isokinetic muscle contraction is the fastest way to increase muscle strength as muscle strengthens uniformly through an entire range of movement. Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise: March 2005 – Volume 37 – Issue 3 – pp 455-460. Applied Sciences: Biodynamics. Abstract

Another study with volleyball players concluded that EMS combined with plyometric training improved vertical jumping performance and showed rapid increases in the muscle strength of knee extensors (muscles that move the knee joint) and plantar flexors (muscles that create movement between the front of the foot and the shin). Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise: October 2002 – Volume 34 – Issue 10 – pp 1638-1644. Applied Sciences: Biodynamics. Abstract

The National Strength and Conditioning Association conducted a study to evaluate and quantify the effects of EMS on the cardiorespiratory system, muscle metabolism and perceived exertion on cyclists. The testing evaluated cycling with EMS vs. cycling without EMS. The main findings indicated that cycling with EMS could enhance aerobic performance in athletes as well as individuals who are unable to sustain heavy workouts. Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research: September 2012 – Volume 26 – Issue 9 – p 2383–2388; doi: 10.1519/JSC.0b013e31823f2749. Original Research. Abstract

The NSCA also conducted a study on the effects of EMS on high performance sports: strength, speed, power, jumping and sprinting ability. The test group was comprised of untrained subjects, trained athletes and elite athletes. Scientific analysis showed significant gains and improvements in all areas, in all fitness levels. Even elite athletes at an already high level of fitness, were able to significantly enhance their performance across the board. The study concluded that EMS is effective in developing physical performance, and stated that EMS is a “promising alternative to traditional strength training”. Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research: September 2012 – Volume 26 – Issue 9 – p 2600–2614. doi: 10.1519/JSC.0b013e31823f2cd1 Abstract

The Association’s study into muscle recovery methods on baseball players indicated that EMS is an effective tool for muscle restoration between innings of pitching. Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research: March 2011 – Volume 25 – Issue 3 – pp 683-688. doi: 10.1519/JSC.0b013e318208adfe. Original Research. Abstract

Our EMS workout targets all muscle groups simultaneously and amplifies effort. In just 20 minutes with one of our qualified trainers, you’ll have accomplished more than you would after hours at a traditional gym.

The EMS suit covers all major muscle groups—even the ones you might have missed at a traditional gym. As you train, your muscles work against their own contractions, building muscle strength and tone. It’s easy, and you can’t go wrong.

The built-in electrodes target, stimulate and develop all the muscle groups, even if you don’t. Our trainers scale and adjust the level of each group separately so the otherwise “weaker links” of the body can be strengthened. Optimal core strength is a major benefit of EMS training!

The electrical impulses work on the muscles directly; there is no pressure on the joints, so they are not overworked—which is often the case with weight workouts.

As there are electrodes built into the training suit along the spinal cord, those rarely trained muscles get worked as well. Muscles therefore get stronger, which can lead to the relief of back problems.

Since it is an effective strengthening workout, it transforms how the body uses up calories. It is a very effective tool for weight loss and fat removal. EMS has been shown to attack and reduce problem fat accumulations.

Q Is it Safe?

AYes. Our product has been evaluated and approved by the CSA Special Inspection Service as per the guidelines for Field Approval of Health Care Equipment.

Q When can I see results?

AAfter your very first EMS session you will feel vitalized and energized. Visible success, such as a better posture usually sets in after three sessions. Reshaping of your body, power increase and improvement of your skin’s appearance will be visible after six consecutive sessions within a period of three weeks.

Q Can I lose weight with EMS?

AYes. In the first phase of the training, you lose centimeters and in the second phase, fat depots are attacked. You also burn more calories because your muscle activity is working five times more, which means that energy consumption will increase.

Q Why is EMS technology much more effective than conventional weight training?

AThe EMS full body workout activates over 90% of the muscle fibers at the same time during each contraction. As opposed to conventional strength training, deeper muscles are used, as well. Therefore, the training produces a much greater effect.

Q Can you do EMS training in the long term?

AYes. Just like with conventional strength training, you should workout regularly. If you do not workout over an extended period of time, the muscles will be reduced to their original status.

Q What should I bring?

AWe supply you with your own specialized workout clothes, water, towels, and parking are available on site, just bring running shoes and a smile.

Q Is EMS training dangerous?

ANo. EMS Training or therapy uses a low-frequency current which is not dangerous. During this process, small intrinsic electric pulses initiate every movement and exclusively activate the striated skeletal muscles. Therefore, the impulse does not seem foreign to the body nor reach the organs or the heart.

Q Who can benefit from EMS training?

AIn general, EMS training is suitable for almost everyone – man or woman, 16 years and older. Contraindications are as follows:

Imagine a full body suit that applies the power of EMS across all of your major muscle groups simultaneously while you work out.

The effect is a better, more balanced workout that accomplishes in only minutes what would normally take hours at the gym. EMS training works your core like never before and tones and strengthens all of your muscle groups at the same time.

EMS technology has been widely used across Europe for a number of years now and is currently distributed across thousands of EMS studios in France, Germany, Spain and 27 other countries worldwide.

Studies on EMS devices say they actually do increase strength, indicating that while a quasi-passive exercise program won’t lead you to your dream body without effort, it could make you stronger.

Various studies confirm you can get serious results from this approach. In fact, the American Council On Exercise recently tested developments in equipment, and revealed that muscle strength and endurance improved over time in those who had used an EMS device.
